Falling

Fear is for the weak.

Her father had taught her that. Fear, in the moment of combat -- in the heat of action, the moment before the kill -- would make one weak. Hesitation would stop a blade faster than any plate or magic. If she stopped to be cerebral; if she hesitated on her course of action, then she would be lost. The Light only reinforced this teaching: it, too, required absolute certainty. Eleeria had never felt the sudden chill of her holy magic pulling away from her, and she was not interested in ever seeing it disappear. So, she made herself believe. Every choice, every difficult decision, backed up with mental certainty. She did not act until she was certain of purpose.

She had no doubts about what she had done.

The ensuing...

The Truth Is...

“The Truth Is, I’m A Bad Person.”
( Set in the present day. )
7 - Bitter

-

“Just try it on, see how you feel.”

By the time Eleeria made up her mind to follow Lily’s advice, it had been several bullshit-filled days since. She thought she had some clever excuses to get out of it -- the armor didn’t fit, first off. She had gone from a scrawny, stick-like rogue with health issues to a healthy, athletic Knight. Weleria had laughed when she saw Eleeria trying to stick her arm into a hole made for a much smaller bicep several months ago for fun.

The other was that she had no real reason to. Why would she want to leave her plate armor? She was happy. Work was….fine. Blackheart was actually fine. The kind of fine she didn’t have to...

5 - Rain

“Please stop crying, Lairen…”

The tears are waterworks today. The five year old is absolutely inconsolable; Eleeria picks her up, letting the tears stream down her shirt as she holds her daughter close.

“But I wanna color!”

“Honey, you can’t color on those. I need those for work.”

“NO!”

The small girl kicks and punches at her mother’s shoulder. Eleeria lets out a soft noise as she holds Lairen away from her body. Strong enough to hold the girl aloft while she screams and kicks, she seems particularly unable to handle the magnitude of tantrum today. The floor is wet at this point; Eleeria’s not sure how one small elf can produce so many tears.

“I WANNA!”

“Well, Lairen, you can’t. That’s just...

The Resurrection

4 - Breakthrough

(Set in July 2020)

-

Would she do anything for Weleria?

Of course she would. What a silly question that would be.

Weleria wanted to come back to life. What a reasonable thing to want.

The interplay of draenic soul magic and death magic could do that. Would she be breaking any laws? No. Moral laws perhaps. But when had Eleeria Silverwing ever cared about morality?

As her joint magics worked together, carefully healing her wife’s soul and ever so gently transferring it from her old and broken body into a beautiful, new one, Eleeria couldn’t help but marvel at the power of it all.

Lyctora had told her that the First was generally a master of resurrection. Others may have more spiritual skills; the...

Like a Shadow

3 - Masks

(Set in the present time.)

-

She felt the heavy helm settle over her head, the uncomfortable stillness as it blocked out her measly sight from her injured eyes following swiftly after. Eleeria took a deep breath, trying not to let her anxiety get the better of her. She was not in the dark, alone; she was standing in the Cove, Ismene standing a few feet away from her. The older woman’s arms were crossed, her expression severe – or they had been, before she placed the suffocating contraption of leather and magic over Eleeria’s head and taken a step back.

Eleeria didn’t quite understand why Ismene had shown up in the Cove. She rarely understood what the older woman did on a good day – like a feral cat,...

The Dead Among Us

2 - Invasion
(Set in February 2020)

-

I can hear them. The ghosts, I mean.

Anara visited Blackheart, and being able to hear Alexander’s absolutely atrocious turns of phrase was….new. Unsettling. I don’t know if I like this – now it’s as if, having heard it once, I hear it all the time. Whenever I use my magic to see, it’s an assault of sound and noise. Screams, pleads, simple conversations…I can’t keep it all straight in my head.

Three years ago I thought I would go insane from paranoia. Now I know I’ll go insane surrounded by the noises of the dead.

Lyctora says it’s something I can learn to ignore. When? How? I’m so tired of turning my head to search for something that’s not there. I already know ...

The First Ascendant

Day 1 - First
( Set in February 2020 )

“You will lead us.”

Her hand is slapped from the air with force.

“Ridiculous. I’m not leading shit.” Eleeria’s voice echoes through the empty space, the sudden sharpness of her tone reverberating with a harsh ring. The person standing in front of her, all gaunt shadows and strange angles beneath her cowl, smiles and says nothing in turn. Nothing needs to be said, really.

So it was ordained, so it shall be.

“I’m not. I know you made some sort of deal with my wife – but my wife isn’t me. You can’t just – hold me accountable for it.”

“Then I suppose you wouldn’t mind if we took away the blessing we bestowed upon you.”

At last, the litany of complaints and...

The Snap

(TW: Blood, death.)

--

You have always been your fathers’ daughter.

There are still raven feathers coating your fingers; the dying caws of avians still sound in your ears, and though you know later you should apologize to Eli for the life being ripped from her friends, now you push it from your mind.

You move through the snow at a clipped speed, ducking between the trees with daggers in hand. You had the foresight to grab your armor and favored weapons before you disappeared into the mountains of Alterac without a trace, evading Lormeus’ increased patrols. Rarely do you use your rogue skills any longer, but there’s something refreshing about being free of obligation and people watching you. That thought alone makes...

The Wedding

The dress sat on a rack in her dressing room, and Eleeria sat in a chair before it, gazing at the expanse of fabric with something like disbelief written in her features. The wedding gown was traditionally Sin’dorei — golden gems accented the white, red, and russet colors reminiscent of fall. She hadn’t worn a wedding dress the last time — just her ceremonial Blood Knight armor. But Weleria had insisted on dresses this time, and so here hers sat: lovingly tailored by her sister, designed by her mothers, the dress was perfect.

And Eleeria could not help but feel a rush of happiness at the sight.

Finally. Finally, finally, they were getting married in front of their friends and family. Eleeria had never had a planned, proper...

Shadowfang Keep

As many thousand as the Eleventh Legion had on Kalimdor, they seemed to have twice that amount in Silverpine. For every line that Eleeria and the combined archers of the Horde and the Warband’s Fifth Cohort managed to down, another rose to take its place. They seemed to be endless – and though the Forsaken stationed in their homeland were tireless, the Fifth Cohort were not. The constant barrage of attacks from the Alliance both day and night frayed the nerves of the living combatants. By the second day of nonstop assault, it made even the undead nervous. Eleeria moved through the injured, a Dreadguard Captain handling the allied movement on the walls for the moment to bring the living General a reprieve. And although he...

General

The Warband's troops were a sight to behold.

A motley cast and riot of colors, slim Sin'dorei marched alongside Highmountain. Forsaken cavalry, mounted on their undead steeds, rubbed elbows with the Shal'dorei on their manasabers. Eleeria watched them approach from her position on the watchtower of the Crossroads, only the sense of Weleria's stolid form behind her keeping her from being immensely nervous.

"How do I face them?" Her voice was soft enough only for Weleria to hear; of course she was nervous. Though Lormeus said that she did not have to fill Ysrathil's shoes, it was hard to imagine herself standing up and replacing the powerhouse of a woman. Ysra had been a force of nature. Eleeria found it hard to be so forceful;...

Self-Doubt

She locked the bathroom door behind her, sinking slowly to the floor with her back against that solid wood. Eleeria buried her head in her hands, shoulders shaking slightly. It was suddenly, and inexplicably, too much to bear – the guilt, the grief of losing so many people in two months; Eleeria sobbed into her hands, grateful for the momentary privacy afforded her by her bathroom’s meager lock.

She couldn’t feel the Light any more. It was that sensation of absolute wrongness that had woken her from her thistle-laced sleep – the sensation of being cold and empty so unusual for her now. She carried the Light as an avatar of the Sunwell wherever she went; now, with so much trauma bearing down on her, so many people...

Resurrection

She returned to the woods in the mountains overlooking Arathi alone, with only her own tumultuous thoughts for company. Loam and underbrush crunched underfoot, but Eleeria did not bother to try to remain silent today. A year, and yet – she was still so angry. The names had changed, the people different, and yet everyone really remained the same. More lost to the brutality of others; more lovers dead for reasons beyond their hands. Erinius has been killed for money, Weleria to SI:7 looking to capitalize on Ysrathil’s weakness. Neither had been the direct cause of their own reckoning, and yet, it hadn’t mattered to any of those who had killed them. Eleeria’s anger had not diminished in a year. It had only grown...

In Defense of Our Heart

We were assigned to investigate the Wailing Caverns, as initial reconnaissance showed that the void activity had been pinpointed to that area. The Warlord accompanied the Warband as rear guard and support, while General Ysrathil Dawnsteel took point, instructing the rest of us to remain hidden in the bushes on either side of the entrance to the Caverns. She had wanted to draw the Ren’dorei out into the open, citing that they were just as prideful as Sin’dorei. The Ren’dorei were not fooled by her taunts or requests, however – they grabbed her, dragging her into the Caverns before any of us could stop them.

We pursued the Ren’dorei, but found we could not pass a barrier of void surrounding the six Alliance and...

Time of Death

The Light warned her something was off well before she made it to the front door of their Suramar apartment. The sensation was like a shiver down her spine; a sense of inherent wrongness, the briefest feeling of stay away! like a whisper from her magic. Disappearing swiftly, only the lingering raise of the skin on her forearms reminded her that something was less than completely normal.

Eleeria frowned, hand hesitating for only a moment, an inch away from the translocation orb. Her magic never lied to her and yet — how could anything be wrong? She had left for work early from the Cove this morning, Weleria departing for Suramar aboard one of the merchant vessels. Weleria would surely be waiting for her; they would go out...

They Call Your Name

She had come to hate the Night Warriors.

Not necessarily because they were enemies on the opposite side of this war for existence. Rather, Eleeria hated them for their weapons, their brutality. She imagined that the healers of the Alliance felt the same way about her and her Order, but as she washed her hands off of blood and grime in an infirmary sink, she couldn’t help but feel resentment. Glancing at herself in the mirror — hair tightly pulled back for once, the sharp lines of her sleepless features starkly visible — she patted her cheeks gently to try perk herself up. “Fortify!”

It didn’t seem to do much — hard to pat away long hours spent healing the injured — but it brought a smile to otherwise severe features,...

The Trial

Vanir’s hooves cut a strange sound on what remained of shattered roadways as his rider picked a path southwest. The Ghostlands had borne the brunt of the Scourge attack, and with the annihilation of most of those who had lived in the area, the roads had fallen to ruin. While residents kept paved areas around their scant houses well-lit at night, the woods seemed nearly a safer option even with the addition of dangerous wildlife. The road itself was perilous compared to the loam and underbrush, but was the only real way to know she was headed in the right direction, with the tree cover so thick and gnarled.

The residents of Tranquilien had warned Eleeria of as much when she had passed through. The paths be nearly as dangerous as the...

A Letter

The letter to Ashideena was perhaps longer than she had anticipated. Written on good quality paper, the handwriting was terrible — but legible. As if the author had taken great pains to try her best to make it so.

--

Five years ago, I was an assassin who was out of work due to an accident I walked into willingly. I had changed my name; most people thought I was dead, but really I was moping — trying to drown out the ghosts with any drug I could get my hands on. Unremarkable. I wouldn’t tell you this normally, but you don’t seem the type to give pity. Which is good, because I don’t want any.

Four years ago, my sister convinced me to join a paramilitary organization that served Quel’thalas’s interests. I agreed,...

Then, Now

(then)

Lunge, swipe, parry, counterattack—

“Again.”

The motions repeated, over and over. Eleeria felt the sweat dripping down her neck, her throat. It had been hours of the same motions, correcting her form and insisting on repetition. Again she had lunged, parried; her legs shook with overuse, stomach growling. The next repetition was sloppy as she reflected on how long ago (and long forgotten) lunch had been. She hadn’t eaten since breakfast early that morning and yet, still her father demanded more. She was on the cup of twenty years and every day seemed to test her limits. Sometimes she didn't even make it into bed before her body began to shut down, curling up in the middle of the rug on her bedroom floor and deeming it...

A Fine Weapon

(( Reposting this from tumblr as I plan to write a follow-up to it soon. This is approximately a year old at this point, so it may not make sense within a linear timeframe with my other stories! ))

--

“You are a weapon.”

The words echoed through the subterranean training yard, deep beneath the residence of the Silver Eye. Eleeria sat, young and wide-eyed, with the two other children in need of instruction. All of them had come to the assassin’s guild for various reasons -- Pielle, the taller and more athletic of the three, because she had no family. Deidral -- a scrawny child, who shook when he held a dagger -- was running from a mother who sought to sell his good looks into a profession perhaps even more dire and joyless...
