Searching

Sister Anetta stood at the entrance to the abbey in Northshire and looked out over the yard. The priest trainer looked concerned as she scanned the area slowly. She gazed from one side to the other until she noticed the Marshall walking towards.

“Any word?” Marshall McBride asked as he stepped closer, his armor ringing as he moved.

“We’ve searched the abbey top to bottom. She’s not inside. Did your men find any sign of her?”

The Marshall shook his head. “No. They checked the cave Sabina was found in earlier, to see if she might have gone back there. But there was nothing. She could be in one of the bigger gnoll caves, but I can’t imagine it’d be a safe place for someone to hide in for long.”

“I don’t know. It may not be as much a problem for her.”

“You think we should go in and check?”

“No,” Sister Anetta said after a moment. “We shouldn’t risk the safety of your men when she might not even be there. We can set up a watch near the entrance and that should be fine.”

“How dangerous is this little girl?” McBride asked, his voice getting quieter.

“Those books we found are not the kind of thing she should have been reading on her own. I have no idea what she could do. Or what she’s already done.”

“Done? You think she’s done more than just play with some candles?”

“Its possible. We need to send word to the Cathedral and to Darkshire. They’ll need to keep watch in case she tries to return to either place.”

“I can’t see how. We locked the gates as soon as we realized what was going on. She couldn’t have gotten away from here.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure of that,” Sister Anetta answered with a slight frown. Then she bowed slightly to the Marshall and turned, walking back into the abbey.

“You ever worked in a tavern before?”

“I helped my mum out when I was younger. Mostly stayed behind the bar, out of the way.”

“Well this one here’s pretty active. We get people from all around coming through here, looking to relax a bit from their travels or stayin’ for the night.”

“Sounds exciting.”

“For the most part, its good people what come through here. But every now and again we get someone who’s a bit rougher than the rest.”

“Then its a good thing that you’re such a big guy and can take care of any problems. I’m not worried, though. I’m pretty good at reading people.”

“What brought you here?”

“I decided it was time for me to get out and see the world.”

“So you ain’t plannin’ to set up roots here, eh?”

“I dunno. Guess I’ll just have to see how things go.”

“Fair enough. There’s a small room in the back you can stay in for now. You can start tomorrow.”

“Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome,” the owner said with a broad smile. “Go get settled in and then you can come back and watch what the room’s like this evening.”

“That sounds great. I’ll get cleaned up and be back soon.”

“Good. And I guess, welcome to Goldshire.”

Uhoh, you get all types in Goldshire...  Also, I feel like they should have sent random newbie adventurers into the gnoll caves.  :D

Good to see how this is shaping up.
