Study in the Abbey Library

Sabina had nodded off in the library of Northshire Abbey. Apparently the chair had been more comfortable than she was aware, for while she had a tall stack of books on the table in front of her she was unable to prevent the inevitable. The young lady’s head leaned to the side, resting against the back of the chair and she softly snored.

Sister Anetta stepped through the doorway of the library and scanned the room. There were several students spaced around, some in quiet conversation and some leaning forward with their faces buried into wide tomes. When her eyes locked onto the student sleeping further in the room, she smiled to herself and slowly made her way to the table. Coming to Sabina’s side, she leaned over and gently laid a hand on her shoulder.

“Sabina. Dear?” the priestess called softly, leaning close to the young lady’s side.

Sabina’s eyes fluttered open and she looked around the room for a moment before she realized where she was and that she had fallen asleep. Turning her head, she looked up to Sister Anetta and gave a slight smile.

“My apologies, sister. I must have fallen asleep.”

“That much was obvious, my dear,” Anetta said as she moved to the other side of the table and sat down. “Are the books that dreadfully boring?”

“No, ma’am,” Sabina answered, looking down as her checks turned a slight shade of red. “I may have been staying up late reading them.”

“Well, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Reading for a purpose, or even curiosity can be good. As long as you don’t obsess with it. And of course, if you don’t read the wrong things.”

“Of course. What time is it?”

“Well, it is two bells after dinnertime. I do hope you didn’t miss your meal.”

“No, ma’am. I must have only nodded off. I came here straight after the meal.”

“That’s good,” Sister Anetta said with a smile, leaning back in her chair. “Have you heard from the people at Darkshire?” she asked, her smile faltering somewhat.

“Nothing recently,” Sabina answered. “They still don’t know why it happened.”

“I had hoped they would have found more news by now,” Sister Anetta offered. “Perhaps…”

Suddenly, a scream broke the silence of the library. All heads jerked up in surprise and looked around the room. At one of the tables, a lone student threw his head back and let out another wail. He reached forward and scattered the books off of his table before bringing his face level with the room. His eyes wide and bloodshot, he looked from side to side before stopping at Sister Anetta and Sabina. Clawing at the table, the young man scrambled over top and stumbled in the women’s direction. As he got closer, he raised up his hands and started grabbing towards Anetta and Sabina.

“What are you doing?” Sister Anetta yelled as she backed around the table. The priestess grabbed Sabina’s arm and started pulling her away from the crazed man.

“DIE!”

The young man leaned forward, still trying to grasp at the people in front of him. From behind him, three other students rushed forward. They wrestled with the student, forcing him to the ground and holding his arms behind his back. The young man thrashed and twisted and tried to pull free, but the others held tight and kept him pinned down.

“What should we do, sister?” one of them asked.

“Keep him down,” Sister Anetta said, daring to take a step closer to look at the young man as he thrashed on the ground, spittle and foam at the edges of his mouth. “Someone go get the guard. We need to restrain him. Then we can find out what is going on.”
