Preliminary Report

“Captain?”

The captain of the Night Watch looked up from his desk as one of the men entered his office. He leaned back in his chair as the militiaman stepped forward with an envelope.

“What is it?”

“Medical report from Stormwind, sir. On the Jensens?”

“Open it up. What’s it say?”

The guard opened the envelope and took out the three papers from inside. Reading over the pages quickly, he turned from one to the next to the next before looking back to the captain.

“Preliminary is pretty much what we saw. He died of a stab wound. She died from loss of blood due to damage to her throat and neck.”

“They say anything about how that happened?”

“It says at first glance, it looks like Mr. Jensen did it. It says...

Traveling Through Goldshire

Sister Anetta glanced at the young lady sitting beside her as she guided the horse along the path through Elwynn Forest.  Sabina Jensen sat quietly next to the priestess as they passed the trees and crossed the rivers. Even though Sabina would answer as briefly as possible, Sister Anetta continued to talk as they traveled. On occasion, Anetta would give the young lady a sad look, but she would then continue on with the mostly one-sided conversation.

“Have you ever been to Goldshire?”

“Twice,” Sabina answered quietly.

“I’m always amazed at how lively a village it is,” the sister offered, looking down the road to the outskirts of the settlement. “It seems like everyone comes from all around to see it.”

Sabina...

Leaving Town

“Ready to head off to Stormwind?” the captain asked, looking up to the two women sitting in the front of the cart.

“I believe so, Captain. Thank you for your assistance.”

“Not at all, Sister Anetta,” the captain of the Night Watch said with a nod to the priestess. Then he turned his attention to the other person in the cart. “Miss Jensen. Once you have had a chance to recover, I will need to speak with you.”

“Yes, sir,” she answered meekly.

“Are you sure that you don’t want an escort to the city?” the captain asked, his gaze going back to the priestess. “I could send someone along with you.”

“The offer is much appreciated,” Sister Anetta answered. “But I would hate to deplete your forces here....

New Inquiry

“And that’s all you saw, sister?”

“I’m afraid so, captain,” Sister Anetta answered. “I never spoke with the poor man.”

“What about Miss Jensen?”

“She’s still in her room right now.”

“Did she see this guy before the accident?”

“She said she hadn’t spoken to him. Have you found out anything about him?”

“Not much,” the captain said, his shoulders slumping a little. “He apparently came into town early this morning.”

“Do you have any information why?”

“No. If he told anyone why he was here, they haven’t come forward yet.”

“Any idea what happened?” Sister Anetta asked as she leaned back in her seat.

“None. The door to his room was locked. No sign that anyone else was in...

Broken Window

Sister Anetta followed the crowd as it surged through the front door and around to the side of the tavern. On the ground, a few feet from the building, was a member of the Night Watch holding a torch and kneeling on the ground next to the body of a young man. Sister Anetta moved through the crowd and stood at the edge of the firelight and looked down at the body.

The man was dressed in simple clothes, not the type that one would wear on the road. His head was turned at an odd angle and his arms and legs were spread from the body. The priestess looked up at the tavern and spied a window on the second floor that had been broken out. Turning back to the body, she watched as the militia man placed a finger on the man’s neck. After a...

Travel Plans

Sister Anetta sat in the common room of the tavern in Darkshire, sipping a glass of noir and listening to the sounds of the room. Next to her sat a young gnome, his hair ruffled and his his clothes showing the worse for wear.

“I’m telling you, miss. The future will be in pneumatic catapults.”

“You seem quite certain of this,” the priestess said as she sipped her wine. The gnome had been regaling her with scientific descriptions since she initially struck up the conversation.

“Of course!” the gnome blurted out in response. “It will be so much quicker that going by horse or ram. Even by gryphon. One straight shot and your there. And you won’t have hire mages for those pesky portals.”

“But what happens when you...

Questions, Answers, and More Questions

The captain of the Night Watch stood next to the door, leaning against the jam and watching. The small office was crowded with various pieces of furniture: a desk covered in papers, two chairs placed in front of the desk, a small table with two chairs at the side, and a sofa against the side wall. In the middle of the sofa sat a young lady, her legs drawn up with her arms wrapped around. A blanket covered her shoulders and rippled slightly as she seemed to sway at little from side to side. Next to her, on the closer end of the sofa, sat another woman in the robes of a priestess.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Miss Jensen?” the captain asked. “I can get you some water if you want.”

The young lady shook her head, causing the...

Memories

The captain of the Nightwatch led the way down the hall and eventually stopped at one door. Opening it, he led the priestess into the office. Along the far wall was a young lady asleep on a sofa. She slept fitfully, turning and whimpering quietly.

“Here you are, sister. Like I said, she’s still asleep.”

“That’s quite alright, captain.” Sister Anetta stepped past the captain and sat down on a chair beside the sofa.

“I need to deal with something real quick, sister.”

“Please go ahead, captain. I will be fine here.”

“If you need anything, just holler out and one of the men will be here right away.”

“Thank you, captain.” The priestess nodded to the militiaman and watched as he turned and left the office,...

Help From The Abbey

The priestess stepped into the cluttered office and looked at the person sitting behind the desk. The man gazed up between stacks of paper and leaned back in his chair.

“Good evening. I’m Anetta from Northshire.”

“Thanks for coming, sister. We can definitely use your help.”

“Not at all. Can you tell me what happened?”

“We’re not entirely sure. A husband and wife apparently appeared to have attacked each other.”

“That’s horrible. Are there any survivors?”

“A young lady, sister of the husband. Name’s Sabina Jensen.”

“Jensen?” the priestess repeated, her eyes widening.

“Yes, ma’am. Know her?”

“Not personally. But if its who I think it is, she was supposed to come to the abbey to start...

Traveler Come To Town

Braghaman was walked up the road from Darkshire on his way home. He had just passed the gryphons when he heard a voice calling to him.

“Brother Larethian.”

Stopping in the middle of the road and turning around, he saw a priestess in white robes stepping onto the road.

“Sister Anetta,” Braghaman said with a bow. “What brings you to Darkshire?”

“The Church sent me here, that there was someone who needed to speak with me. And what of you brother? Are you back from the war?”

“I am, sister.”

“Will you be returning to your work in Stormwind, then?”

“That is still being negotiated, but I think that I will be continuing my work here.”

“Well, I hope that the Light will bless your endeavors, brother. Now, I...

More Questions Than Answers

The captain of the Nightwatch made his way back to Darkshire, going over what he had seen in mind as he walked. Crossing into the town, he passed the fountain and came to the steps leading to the town hall. As he took the first step, another member of the militia came through the doors and began descending.

“Captain. Any news?”

“Not much. More questions than answers at this point.  How’s the girl?”

“Still in shock, I think. They gave her something to sleep.”

“Was word sent to Stormwind?”

“As soon as you told us to, sir. We haven’t heard anything back, yet, but its still fairly early.”

“Yeah, but I was hopeful,” the captain replied, rubbing a hand over his face. “Probably won’t get anything back...

First Thoughts At The Scene

The captain of the watch knelt down next to one of the bodies. Pulling the sheet back that covered it, he leaned forward to look at the wounds to her neck and shoulder.

“Looks like she was mauled,” the captain said, glancing over his shoulder towards the Nightwatch member standing behind him.

“That’s what we thought when we first got here. Worst still, he’s got blood all over his face,” the militiaman explained, gesturing to the other body.  The captain followed the gesture and looked at the other body. The sheet was tented up above the man’s chest where the knife was protruding.

“So what are we thinking,” the captain said as he stood up slowly. “That he started biting her so she stabbed him?”

“Possibly,”...

Scream In The Night

Watcher Jordan kept his steady pace, walking along the road leading west out of Darkshire. The lanterns swayed with the gentle breeze and shone their light down on the road as the militiaman walked beneath their glow. The wind caused the leaves on the trees to rustle slightly, providing a lulling background noise to the watcher’s march.

He was just to the edge of town when he heard the scream. It was piercing and filled with terror, causing the hairs on the watcher’s arms to stand on end. He stopped dead in his tracks and turned to the direction where it seemed that the cry had come from. Almost immediately, he heard the sound of boots from behind him. Turning back towards town, he saw Watcher Mocarski running towards him with his...

A Lone Candle In The Dark

The main room of the home fit in the with the rest of the house.  Small.  Some might have tried to be polite and call it ‘cozy’, at least as much as any home on the outskirts of Darkshire could be called that. It was small house, but it was built with care. The floors and walls were made with a deep red wood, though they had started to darken over time and with use. The woodwork shone with the thin slivers of moonlight the managed to sneak through the canopy outside and dove past the torn curtains that hung limply from the rod above the window, casting a pale glow into the room.

In one corner sat a small table, a lone candle sitting on it and sputtering as it was nearly burnt out. The flame cast shadows around the room that...
