Bad Feeling

The Larethian home sat silently in the shadow of the nearby forest of Duskwood. Niviene walked into the bedroom to find Braghaman already in bed with his eyes closed. The priestess smiled, moved over to the bed and turned down the covers before sitting on the edge. She started to lean forward to blow out the lamp on her nightstand when she paused. Niv’s smile faded as she looked around the room and slowly sat back up.

“Bragh?”

“Huh?”

“Something’s wrong.”

Bragh’s eyes shot open and he turned his head to look at Niviene, still sitting on the edge. “Did you hear something?”

“No. But something is wrong. Can’t you feel it?”

Braghaman sat up and tilted his head slightly, his eyes looking down. After a moment, the...

Portents and Plans

Erik opened the door to Madame Eva’s inn and stepped inside. The crowd inside was loud and friendly and called out a greeting to the rogue as his eyes adjusted to light inside. Madame Eva appeared from around the stairs and walked over to Erik. She laid a hand on his arm and smiled. Without a word, she turned and nodded to a corner in the back of the common room. Erik followed Eva’s glance and saw a lone person sitting at the far table.

The rogue moved through the crowd and made his way to the back of the room. Sitting at the table in the corner, facing the front door, Braghaman had both his hands around a mug and vague look in his eyes as if he were lost deep in thought. Erik stood quietly next to the table and waited. After a...

Unsettling Dreams

It was a quiet night at the Larethian house. A breeze pushed through the trees outside and brushed up against the house, but the inside was warm and secure from the cool winds of the season. All the candles had been snuffed and shadows danced throughout the home. Only the sounds of sleep could be heard inside.

Deeper into the night, a grunt could be heard from the first floor. Soon another followed. And then another. Braghaman lay on his back, shifting a little from side to side. Suddenly, he grunted again as his head turned to the side and his arms flew into the air as if to ward off an attack. His eyes opened and then blinked several times as he tried to focus on the objects in the dark. Slowly he lowered his arms and brought his...

Take Care

Niviene paced the office, wringing her hands and casting the occasional look at the young man who sat passively in the chair opposite her desk.

“Why in the world would anyone think he could be guilty? How could they arrest him? Everyone knows Bragh, they know he’s a paladin in the employ of the Cathedral.”

Erik didn’t bother answering, he knew the priestess well enough to know that she wasn’t really speaking to him, she was thinking aloud. And working herself up into a temper. He didn’t know yet if she planned to go to Stormwind but he certainly wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of the petite blonde’s anger. Not that he wouldn’t mind being there to enjoy the show.

“Did they get Shadowbreaker? What did he...

Fumbles and Phobias

It had been Niviene’s habit for years now to continue on across the bridge that connected Duskwood and Westfall, circling down one embankment and up there other, verifying the stability of the structure as well as searching for evidence of suspect activity. On more than one occasion such an inspection had helped the members of the Shrouded Dawn get a jump on the bad guys and thwart them before they could do a great deal of harm.

Tonight had been like any other night. Braghaman had arrived at the square in Darkshire first and by the time the priestess was able to get there a newcomer had arrived. Highlord Quint stood, his golden armor shining in the dying light of the evening, the two paladins deep in discussion of events across the...

New People and Places

Niviene watched the children as she walked down the hall, the new assistant dean at her side. Unaccustomed as they were to a woman wearing anything other than a modest, serviceable dress or heavy armor, they were somewhat taken aback by the woman dressed from head to toe in leather. Some of the children cast covert glances while others outright stared, until they realized that the headmistress was looking at them. It wasn’t that the newcomer’s clothes were menacing or risque, it was just an uncommon sight at Darkshire Academy.

The two women walked through the building, Niviene explaining the layout of classes, the daily schedules, and what one could expect from a typical day at the school until finally they stopped at a door on the...

Maternal Instinct

The thing sat limp in the draenei's hand, a gelatinous blob with barbed tentacle that hung like the dripping entrails of a gutted deer. Niviene paled at the sight of it, her fair complexion turning to near parchment white. She moved to stand closer to Bragh, slipping her hand into his, seeking comfort in his strength.

The priestess watched in horrified fascination as Daciana tied the tentacled thing around her head like a bandana; it was all Niviene could do to keep her supper down at the sight. The draenei stood in the center of the group, turning to look at each of them. After a few moments Daci declared every one free of the parasite that took control of the mind of its host. And everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Daci paused in...

The Only Thing Constant is Change

Niviene stepped out of the solicitor’s office, her head reeling at how quickly it had all been done. They had only discussed a few weeks ago. The decision hadn’t come easily, there were more than a few sleepless nights as she went over the different scenarios and possible repercussions in her mind but in the end they had both agreed that this is what they wanted. This was what was best for the family.

Her steps took her mechanically to the gryffin master and the man, recognizing her, had sent her on her way, his brow creased with worry. It had been ages since the priestess was too distracted to spend a moment or two in small talk, inquiring about his children. Whatever it was it certainly had her head somewhere else.

When the...

Happy Birthday!

The house was quiet, everyone was still sleeping except her. She climbed up on the window seat and pulled back the flowered curtains to look down into the garden below. Momma’s flowers had just started blooming, the ones that were brave enough and strong enough to come out while the mornings were still cold that is. Korissa knew she shouldn’t touch those flowers, momma needed them for the special inks she made for the man who painted pictures on people’s skin, like the angel wings he put on daddy.

Kori slipped down from the seat and rummaged through her drawers, finding some clothes that would be warm, wool socks that came up over her knees, a thick linen underdress and a wool overdress, topped by a thick knitted sweater. She...

Seeing

Niviene glared at the woman sitting across from her, the woman looked back with an air of obstinance, her blue eyes narrowed, her brow furrowed. The priestess looked closely at the woman’s features, trying to trace the furrows of grief and pain in her eyes and the lines of her face.

She wondered if anyone who looked at her might read the trials her own life had taken. Could they see that she’d been married twice before, both men leaving her for something they considered better? Could they see that she was a mother though she’d never given birth? Could they see the shadows that lurked beneath the surface, always ready to seep through her consciousness, to shrine through the blue of her eyes, making them gray pools of madness?

If...

What's in the Box

A medium sized crate arrived at the Larethian home, addressed to the head of the household, it’s shipping label marking it’s origin as Aerie Peak. The children circled the box throughout the day, their curiosity driving them to pepper Niviene with questions to which the priestess would only shrug with a knowing smile.

She set about cooking dinner, taking special care with the dishes, fretting over the results. Everything had to be just right but the cake had fallen when she took it from the oven, the meat was a little over done, and she hadn’t had time to clean up before she heard Braghaman’s footfalls on the front porch.

She took a quick moment to smooth her hair back from her face and pat some color into her cheeks before...

Second Chances

Niviene peered down from her office window, watching as the young woman who’d just left her office stepped out onto the back lawn of the academy.

She was a beautiful creature, quite exotic in appearance. Her hair seemed to glow with the iridescence of a raven’s wing, dark and ever changing, from deep forest green to dark, ocean blue. She was an elf, void elf is what they were called. And though she was taller than Niviene the priestess couldn’t help but attribute the word petite to the woman.

She watched the woman approach Banny and Korissa as they played in the garden, waiting to see how the children would respond to the strange woman. The boy seemed a bit hesitant but the little girl turned a bright smile on the woman and...
