The Will of the Light

“I’m here to see Bishop Lancaster, he sent for me.” Niviene said to the third priest she’d been directed to, her voice taking on an impatient edge. It had been ages since she’d been to the Stormwind Cathedral and longer still since anyone there had thought to ask for her specifically. Unable to determine what the summons was about, the priestess had agreed to make the journey to the capital, certain she would be home before the school day was over.

“He’s just through there.” the priest motioned vaguely toward a door, his expression harried and dour. Niviene opened her mouth to speak but the man glowered at her and walked away. With a sigh the priestess walked through the indicated door, startled to see a bustle of...

Questioning the Teacher

The woman sat across from the headmistress, her dark, shadow green hair shimmering strangely in the lamplight. Her face was still, like a dusky gray porcelain doll, with only the occasional blink. She listened intently, trying to determine where this line of questioning would take her, wondering if the shoe she’d been waiting to to drop was finally falling.

Niviene watched the alchemy teacher, looking for a hint of emotion but there was none, and it left the priestess more than a little unnerved, “I understand she has been spending time with you, more time than her classes require.” she paused then gave the woman a tentative smile, “Is my daughter showing an interest in potions?”

Nelandrys nodded, “Yes mistress, she is...

New People and Places

Niviene watched the children as she walked down the hall, the new assistant dean at her side. Unaccustomed as they were to a woman wearing anything other than a modest, serviceable dress or heavy armor, they were somewhat taken aback by the woman dressed from head to toe in leather. Some of the children cast covert glances while others outright stared, until they realized that the headmistress was looking at them. It wasn’t that the newcomer’s clothes were menacing or risque, it was just an uncommon sight at Darkshire Academy.

The two women walked through the building, Niviene explaining the layout of classes, the daily schedules, and what one could expect from a typical day at the school until finally they stopped at a door on the...

Second Attempt

(Another collaborative writing between Niviene and myself, though not as long as our normal stuff.)

The gentleman tugged his cloak tighter around his shoulders as he walked down the path from the gryphon master. The shadows cast by the trees always made Darkshire seem colder than the season should be, at least in his mind. In the back of his mind, he noted the clock tower chiming in town. Eventually he made his way to the gate that welcomed people to the Darkshire Academy.

As he stepped into the courtyard outside of the main building, the sound of children started moving towards him. Within moments, the doors to the academy opened and students of various ages exited on their way home. The gentleman stepped to the side to let them all...

Repairing The School

The taps of Braghaman’s hammer echoed along the road into Darkshire. He put the last nail flush with the wood and then stepped back to look at his handy-work. The frame of the window was repaired and the panes of glass were set in properly. Bragh hooked the claw of of his hammer into his belt then put his hands on his hips.

“Good work, commander.”

“Thank you.” Bragh turned to see a woman standing at the entrance to the academy’s courtyard. He recognized her as a parent of one of Niviene’s students, but for the life of him he couldn’t remember her name.

“Maybe you missed your calling as a carpenter.”

“That’s possible. I’ve used a hammer for both.”

“Hopefully they’ll increase the patrols on this side...

Intruders

Insomnia was not a problem Niviene usually experienced. It was easy to fall asleep with Braghaman’s warmth beside her, easy to slumber through the night knowing she was safe in his arms. So when she woke in the wee hours of the morning, heavy with a sense of foreboding, the priestess couldn’t ignore the feeling.

She rose quietly, slipped from the room and padded on barefeet to make a circuit of the house, checking the windows and doors before moving upstairs to check the children who were nestled in their beds, sleeping soundly. She paused at the base of the stairs, taking a moment to take stock of the wards that surrounded the house; all were intact, nothing seemed amiss.

As she entered the bedroom Bragh cracked an eye open,...

Second Chances

Niviene peered down from her office window, watching as the young woman who’d just left her office stepped out onto the back lawn of the academy.

She was a beautiful creature, quite exotic in appearance. Her hair seemed to glow with the iridescence of a raven’s wing, dark and ever changing, from deep forest green to dark, ocean blue. She was an elf, void elf is what they were called. And though she was taller than Niviene the priestess couldn’t help but attribute the word petite to the woman.

She watched the woman approach Banny and Korissa as they played in the garden, waiting to see how the children would respond to the strange woman. The boy seemed a bit hesitant but the little girl turned a bright smile on the woman and...
