A Captain's Thoughts

My elder brother, Landyn, was pronounced lost at sea and presumed dead when salvage was found of his ship along the coast. House Enturose, a minor noble house, owned a shipyard famous for their sleek, fast ships so unlike the typically larger ships built by the other Tirian shipwrights, and Landyn Enturose was the family’s big bid to move up in society with his devastatingly powerful new design.

I was a child. Landyn was my idol. More than ten years my senior and one of the youngest and most promising builders of the time, and my only brother. Sometimes he’d take me out on the waters in a little rowboat and talk with me about all sorts of things. He taught me how to ride a horse, read building drafts, keep a ledger, play darts, and a few words in a lower tongue. Whenever he left to sea I was distraught and refused to eat or sleep.

My parents were furious with me all the time. My twin sister, Zaryanna, Zary for short, was the perfect little angel of a noble’s daughter. By ten she was already lined up for possible marriage proposals from wealthy families. I, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with all that. Landyn was my escape; he was the only one whom could talk with father and have my punishment lessened whenever I did something frowned upon.

Landyn’s death was the death of my childhood. I ran. My father was a wreck and lashed out at me when he was angry about anything. My mother didn’t attempt to defend me. My sister was dotted on as the perfect child and covered for me plenty of times while I’d run around Boralus Harbor trying to find any sign of my brother’s crew. I stowed away during that time. I ran away as far as I could think was possible and I didn’t turn back. I changed my name … then changed it again. I wanted to never be found by Lord Enturose and his lackies.

Now Lord & Lady Enturose are dead. Lady Zaryanna of Enturose was lost to the Horde attack on Theramore. Landyn is still dead. As far as I know I’m the only Enturose child left, and I was written out of the will after I was gone for ten years. The shipyard has a new name and new designers. I’ve nothing to claim here. Thus I’m still Lynx Dilancri. I have not taken on my old name nor fought for what may be considered mine by birth right. I’m just a trader from the mainlands to this place. That’s what I’ve been to my homeland for many years and I don’t want to change that now.

“Excuse me, Captain?”

My First Officer is the best distraction from my own mind. He’s Kaldorei and I believe far younger than he says he is. “Enter.”

“I have the information you asked for about Holt & Thorne Trading. Also, you’ve received a summons from the harbor master; he mentioned an old shipyard and the Mistrunner II design.”
