A Tug On The Line

Marachius had been sitting on the edge of the canal for the better part of an hour. The bucket beside him held three fish. They were decently sized, not terribly big but not too small either. With his line in the water, the young man would twitch his fishing rod a little bit every now and then as he tried to entice more fish to his bait.

After a few more minutes, he felt a tug on his line. Marachius reeled the line in and lifted up his fishing rod. Another decently sized fish hung above the water and started to swing back. Marc reached out with one hand to grab the line and pulled the fish closer. Setting the rod beside him, the paladin pulled the hook out of the fish’s mouth and put it in the bucket with the others. Then he reached into the smaller cup beside the bucket and took out some more bait, spearing it onto his fishing hook. Taking up the rod once more, he then flicked his wrist and sent the line back out into the water.

“Why do you do that?”

Marachius looked over his shoulder to see the familiar face of a teenage boy standing behind him.

“Do what?”

“Fishing? Why bother?”

“Its relaxing,” Marachius answered with a shrug before turning his attention back to the water.

“But you could just go buy the fish at the market.”

“I could.”

“Then why are you doing this?”

“Well, this way I don’t have to buy anything.”

The teenager stepped forward and cautiously looking into the bucket. Seeing the fish inside, he then leaned away as if he thought they might jump out and attack him.

“They’re not too big.”

“No, but they’re big enough. Maybe I’ll get lucky next time and get one of the really big ones in here.”

“What’re you going to do with them?”

“I’ll clean them up and cook them.”

“You’ll be eating a lot of fish,” the teenager said with a slight frown at the idea.

“They’re not for me. I’ll cook them and then take them to the orphanage.”

“The orphanage?” the teenager repeated.

“Yeah,” Marachius replied, glancing back over his shoulder at the boy. “They don’t always get a lot of different foods. This’ll be a nice change for some of them.” Marachius turned his attention back to his line and twitched the fishing rod again.

“Oh.” The teenager looked down at the bucket again and thought quietly. After a few moments, the boy shrugged and walked away, more than once looking back at the paladin who was fishing on the side of the canal.

For me it's quite interesting to observe how everyone is doing meaningless things quite often... I feel like my deeds have meaning and the deeds of others lack it. That is of course not true. All of that is just because I fail to see their motivations and I rarely care to ask why they started doing the thing in the first place.

Usually people have some very good reasons to replaying a behavior.

So why is Marachius such a good paladin? How did it start?

Basically, he's just a good person. He likes to be helpful to others, and like so many people he definitely wants to help (and root for) the underdog. Some of that comes from the fact that he grew up in an orphanage, so he knows first hand what its like to want for something, but not be able to get it. And to be overlooked by everyone else just because of the happenstance of his life. He didn't like being ignored, so he doesn't want to ignore anyone else if he can avoid it. For this reason, he tends to also feel really guilty if he thinks that he accidentally ignored someone.

He is also the kind of person who wants to see the good in people. He may not always see it right away, and he may get frustrated with the actions of others, but he still hopes that its there and that if its not at the surface, then it may just need a little nudge.

And, lastly, there is a small part of him that is trying to live up to the image of his father that Marachius carries in his mind. Its not uncommon with kids that they look up to their parents, and Marc definitely thought his father was one of the best paladins around. So he wants to honor his father by being as good of a paladin as he can, as well.
