The three of them stood in the kitchen, Kyalith, her hands elbow deep in hot, sudsy water, washed the dinner dishes while Regynn took the clean ones from her and rinsed them, then handed them to Clair for drying.
“I think it’s romantic. It’s like me and my husband, we knew each other from school. From the moment I looked at him I knew he was the one.” Kya said as she handed a platter to Regynn.
Regynn took the dish, sighing in exasperation, “I’ve told you a million times, Marc isn’t my boyfriend. We’re just friends.”
“You have to forgive my sister.” Clair said, taking the platter and swiping a towel across it’s wet surface then putting the still damp dish on the shelf. “She sees the world through rose colored glasses where romance is concerned.”
Kya leveled a haughty gaze on Clair, “At least I believe love is more than just a quick tussle in the sheets with whoever is available.”
“I’ll have you know I have very discerning taste, there just happen to be more than a couple of men who meet my criteria. Besides, why limit yourself to just one when there’s a world of variety out there?” she turned to look at Regynn, “What about you? Are you the adventurous type, or a one man kinda gal?”
Regynn shrugged her shoulders as she rinsed the last dish and handed it over, “Don’t ask me, I wouldn’t know.”
The sisters both stopped what they were doing to turn and look at the priestess, “Do you mean to say you’ve never had a man?” Clair asked, her voice bubbling with mirth.
“Yeah. I mean, no, I haven’t.” Regynn looked from one woman to the other as they stood gapeing at her. She shifted slightly, beginning to feel as if she’d grown to heads until Kya finally spoke, “Well surely you’ve been kissed.”
Regynn shook her head, “Nope, not even that.”
“Well, what kind of boyfriend is he to have never even tried to kiss you?” Kya asked in indignation.
Regynn pulled her hands from the water and snatched the towel from Clair, “I’ve told you a million times. He isn’t my boyfriend.” she ground out between clenched teeth as she stalked toward the door.
Clair, quick on her feet, stepped in front of the priestess, placing a placating hand on her shoulder, “Sorry. We know. You just surprised us is all. And Kay doesn’t have a filter between mer mouth and her brain.” she gently steered Regynn into the living room, “So, tell us about it. Your relationship with Marc. Is he like a brother to you?”
“I don’t know. I’ve never had a brother so I don’t have anything to reference.” Regynn realized the sisters were waiting for me and she shrugged, “We grew up together at the orphanage. No one wanted to adopt us for some reason. The other kids picked on me all the time and Marc protected me. He kept me safe.” she smoothed the wrinkles from her skirts, “He’s just always been there, I can’t imagine life without him.”
Kya sighed wistfully, “Now that’s what a boyfriend would do.”
Two heads turned sharply to look at the red head, one blonde and one brunette, Clair and Regynn spoke in unison, with equal tones of exasperation, “He’s not a boyfriend.”
