“I don’t understand.” Regynn stood in front of the desk, her look of bewilderment plain for all too see.
The officer in charge scowled up at her, “What’s to understand. You’ve received new orders. You’re to leave on the morning tide and return to Stormwind.”
“But I haven’t gotten the information from the prisoner yet.”
“Any information that lout may, or may not have had, is irrelevant now. The war is over. Your services are no longer required. You’re orders have been rescinded, you’ve been recalled.” he shuffled some papers and thrust them into a folder, all but slamming the cover shut, “You will go to your quarters immediately and pack. As I said, your ship departs on the morning tide.” With that the man turned his attention to another file and another stack of papers, effectively dismissing her.
Regynn stood for a moment longer then dropped a quick curtsey, turned and fled the room. She stood outside the closed door for a moment, taking several deep breaths in an effort to calm her racing thoughts, jumping slightly when the orderly who had been her previous escort spoke her name.
“I’m sorry sister, I didn’t mean to startle you. Are you alright? You look a little frazzled.” he asked with a friendly smile.
Returning the smile weakly she nodded, “Yeah, well… it’s....” she paused and shrugged, “Looks like you’re getting rid of me already. I’m going home in the morning.”
A slight frown marred the young man’s brow, “That’s sad news. But I’m sure you’ll be happy to get back to the city and out of this Light forsaken cold.”
Reggy laughed softly, “Yeah, I hate the cold so I guess that’s good. Well, if you’ll excuse me I have to go pack. Again.”
The orderly watched her until Regynn disappeared up the stairs then rapped sharply on the office door, entering at an equally sharp retort. “Limson, the priestess is leaving in the morning. See that she’s on board that ship.” Captain Crumbaugh said, never looking up from his work.
The orderly nodded, “Yes sir. Will there be a report going with her sir?”
The older man peered up from his paperwork, “Do try being sly with me boy. You know as well as I do there weren’t any secrets for her to get out of that bag of bones in the brig. I don’t know what tricks the baron has up his sleeve but I don’t have time to mollycoddle one of his playthings.”
“Playthings sir? I don’t think she’s a plaything.” Limson remarked.
“Of course she isn’t that sort of plaything. She’s an innocent.” the older man frowned down at the folder with Regynn’s name written along one edge, “There’s a reason she was sent out here that has nothing to do with the prisoner. Someone wanted her out of Stormwind and the baron obliged. She’s a pawn in someone’s game.”
He shook his head and looked back up at the orderly, “Not my problem. I’ve got a garrison to run. We’ll leave her to the Light.”
The plot thickens!
