Darkness In The Night

The shadows were deep, almost tangible as they seeped between the trees. In the distance, eerie howls could be heard echoing through the forests as if they were greeting the night that had fallen across the land. A lone figure stood in the shadows, blackened armor blending with the darkness but not quite completely, as if the armor were too dark for the shadows to contain. The only light cast from this lone sentry were the two points that shown from his helm. Two red points that seems to have a fire burning deep in them. The eyes stared intently through the trees, keeping watch on the home in the distance.

“He has returned home,” a cold, metallic voice said calmly, quietly. “Finally.”

The armored figure stopped speaking, but there seemed to be a howl that whispered around him.

“I was worried that I would have to travel to another planet to find him. My patience is vast. But it is not infinite. Its seems my fears were unfounded. He’s is finally back.” Then he paused again. “Now, that bring me to the question of you.”

The dark helm turned away from the house, looking to a man tied to a tree nearby. The man was battered, with his face bruised and blood staining his tunic. His colors marking him as a member of the Nightwatch were torn and hung loosely from his shoulders. A gag was wrapped tightly across his mouth and his wrists were bound behind him around the tree. The guard whimpered as the death knight looked at him.

“You are so different from him,” the death knight said. “He came here to live in this place where the Light cannot reach, cannot penetrate the shadows. He chose to walk in darkness. But you, you had no choice, did you? Were you born here, with no chance to leave? Or did you get stationed here, against your preferences? You’re here because others made that decision for you. But he decided this for himself.”

The dark warrior leaned closer and placed his hand on the guard’s shoulder. His finger found one of several wounds on the guard and began to dig in, causing the guard to make a muffled cry against the gag.

“He chose to abandon the Light and walk in darkness. And now, darkness will stalk him. I want you to tell him,” the death knight said, leaning closer to the guard. “You shall tell him that death comes for him. You shall be my harbinger.” The death knight released his grip on the guard’s shoulder and his cries subsided to sporadic whimpers.

“On second thought,” the death knight whispered before putting his hand around the guard’s neck. The death knight squeezed, causing the guard to gasp and cough. Then, after a few moments, the guard stopped struggling and slumped quietly against the tree.

“I shall tell him myself.”

Yikes! Much darker perspective on Bragh's homecoming than Niv's story!

I like knowing there's something lurking for him and there will be more story to come.

I like keeping an old enemy around for a rainy day.  ;)
