Warnings In The Night

(Originally posted Sept 29, 2010)

Braghaman sat near the fire with his feet propped up on the hearth. Madame Eva floated around the common room, checking on all of her regular customers and the weary travelers who sought a safe room for the night. But she always found a moment to check on the paladin, even though she knew he would never ask for anything more than a cup of coffee to help keep the chill in check.

Walking away from him again, Madame Eva patted Bragh on his shoulder. The slight metallic ringing could be heard from the armor he had beneath his traveling cloak. She turned towards the door as a new person arrived to her inn. The hostess greeted her new guest, a large man with his cloak pulled close, but it seemed as though she was only slightly aware of him. After a greeting, she had stopped and tilted her head as if she were listening to someone else, then returned her attentions to this new person.

"I am fine," the stranger responded when Eva asked if he required anything. "I'm here to meet someone," he added as he scanned the room. "And there he is," he said quietly as his eyes settled on Braghaman sitting in front of the fireplace. He nodded to Madame Eva and then quietly walked to stand next to the hearth. Looking down, he watched Braghaman sipping his hot drink.

"This seat taken?" the traveler asked, motioning to the empty seat next to the paladin. Braghaman looked up and a smirk appeared on his face.

"Depends, Lord Shadowbreaker. Are you here to arrest me?"

Grayson Shadowbreaker sat down in the chair, chuckling as he did.

"No thank you," Shadowbreaker said. "I saw what happened to the last guy who tried that on you. I like being able to talk without pain."

"I did warn him," Bragh said grinning. "He should've believed me."

"I've no doubt," Shadowbreaker responded. "But you've bought yourself a great deal of trouble in doing so," he added, his

tone becoming more serious.

"I've heard. Wanted posters all around Stormwind."

"You've been back?" Shadowbreaker asked, looking at Braghaman who only smirked in response. "That's a fairly reckless thing to have done. If they had caught you there, neither I nor the bishop could've done anything."

"I know," Bragh said, his mood becoming more serious. "But you're not doing yourself any favors coming here to see me."

"Faris wouldn't dare do anything to me. He's not brave enough to cross the Bishop yet, even if Father Corenyn is supporting him. Besides," the elder paladin added, "I may have taught him everything he knows but I certainly didn't teach him everything I know."

"Any word on the dead priest that I found?" Braghaman asked, changing the subject.

"We seem to have a few members of the church who cannot be accounted for yet. Most are likely just traveling and we haven't been able to catch up to them yet."

"Most," Braghaman muttered, taking a sip from his coffee.

"Something's going on, Braghaman. I'm not sure what, but it feels like someone is up to something, but no one wants to talk. No one wants to say that they knew why a priest could go missing."

"I'll keep digging then. I plan on going out on patrol again later tonight. Maybe I'll find some more clues to help us," Bragh said soberly.

"Keep your wits about you, Larethian," Shadowbreaker said as he stood from his chair. "I wouldn't be surprised if Faris sent some men to infiltrate the Watchers in order to get to you."

"It'll be funny to watch him try," Bragh said as he held his hand out. Lord Shadowbreaker shook the offered hand, chuckling quietly, then turned to leave.

"Yes. Yes it would."
