There's a room where the light won't find you

Hallways once filled with life and laughter, with a pact made between siblings. A home built by loving parents and dutiful children. A place for growth and learning, torn asunder by the petty wiles of the elite. Whispers of memories past flowed from the walls as if spoken by the stones themselves, somewhere down abandoned corridors a screams of the dead rang out. Mental static mixed with deft footfalls on broken ground.

"Enough, Zaravala."

His voice echoed through her head. The terrified look on his void touched face as the light slipped from his mates eyes. The smell of blood. She scrunched her nose at an unseen smell. Visiting only to retrieve her glaives and mask, already proved to be a poor choice.

The crimson haired nightmare wandered through the broken hallways, fel flames trailing along torn tapestries and broken remains from looting and decay. Who was monster and who was man?

"ENOUGH"

Her whole form shivered as she remembered the feeling of void pressing against her flesh, the recoil of her own demon, Shriz'kag as it worked its way up, encasing her in the darkness.

When was enough really enough?

"Was this not information you sought?"  Shriz'kag's voice echoed in her head this time "Are you not one step further on your path for understanding?"

"Shut up." Zaravala spoke aloud, her voice carrying down the hallways and for once the demon obliged.

The end of the passage neared, opening into the very same room where she lost everything, mixed mental images blurred as emotions boiled within her once more.

A sharp recoil rolled through her, head rolling to the side as the high pitched wail reverberated through her memories, her mothers cry not easily forgotten. The sound faded, morphing into the screams of her brother as he fought against the berating blows of her fist and cried out for his mate.

She rolled her shoulders and took a deep breath as she stepped over the broken chains.

"I can't change it. I can't take it back. I... Wish I could. If only to handle you two different. I... Dizarak, I didn't.... I didn't recognize you. Truly I didn't. Time, and void, changed you... I.... I fell in love. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

A low hiss escaped her lips, the one voice she hadn't expected to recall...the murderous one, the voice that cost her everything. She pinched the bridge of her nose and breathed as she sank to her knees.

Love.

Fate's twisted joke, was that all her life was? Some series of sick humor that benefited Dizarak in the end and left her with nothing?

Love. What a false emotion. No one loved her.

No one could love a monster.
