Whispers and Echoes

A letter arrives, bearing a golden wax seal depicting a half-sun - with a slight bulge among the wrapping. The Ranger Lord may, or may not recognize the sigil as that of Whitedawn. It has been a long time, after all - and she didn’t brandish as much too often in the past. Should he open it, the handwriting is far more composed than the young woman he’d remember ever seemed to be; that, and a small, wooden rabbit rolls out - one of a pair he’d carved with his own hands - now well-worn by another’s hands. It is, perhaps, more of a message than any of her written words can convey - he’s never left her thoughts.

Drifter,

I cannot begin to count the years since you graced my path; since you - and Gideon - stood beside me in a...

Would Have, Could Have, Should Have

I died a little death as I rounded the corner - cigarette dancing in my fingers, singing them with searing little kisses after its fall from on high.

Aelberyn’s voice, and...Iloam. And atop the steps like a vision - the Ranger Lord, himself. All the other faces blurred, and I couldn’t breathe. I came for cupcakes, and...hadn’t I known this was inevitable? I got the letter to Elaeryn, but perhaps I’d become complacent in the absence of a response. And I’ve had Iloam and Aelberyn’s letters gathering dust for ages, now...but the words spilled from me like blood from a wound, all the same.

There are days I feel powerful...and days I remember that I am also very tender in places. With the three of them gathered before me -...

The Drifter’s Tale: Cinders, Revisited (in honor of Love is in the Air)

He awakens to the shimmering garnet light of smoldering coals. The faint tinge of smoke upon the air, mixed with the faintly spicy scent of their entwined bodies, brings him back to the very beginning. To that fateful night in Outland, surrounded by the gruff protectiveness of the Mok’Nathal tribe. A resigned drifter and an earnest lieutenant willing to follow him to the painful corners of his past; to the shattered land of the lost Ranger-Captain, demonic lies, survival of the fittest and jaded Scryers. There they would build a sacred trust, forged beside a simple campfire and written in ardent whispers on the nether-threaded sky.

Kissing her shoulder he shifts, sitting up to watch the cinders thoughtfully. Dark brown hair...

Journey Beyond (2)

The Ranger Lord rose, brushing snow from his cloak as he made his way toward the cabin. It was an effort to do so calmly with nerves rattled as they were, yet he put one foot in front of the other, concentrating upon his breath to keep his muscles from tightening and thereby heightening the vague sense of anxiety he wrestled with. Upon reaching the doorway, he took in the carvings and knotwork whittled with care over the years. Each curve and spiral, each snarling face and graceful frond of fern, brought him back to the present moment and a state of expectant readiness. With an exhale he pushed open the heavy oaken door and uttered the only word that was worthy to break his concentration.

“Neri…?”

Despite stating it softly, her...

Need

Drugs only keep the urges numbed - quiet, and well-behaved. But it grows more and more - like treating hunger with handfuls of candy...it's instant gratification, but it doesn't do much for your actual hunger. Eventually the taste of sugar makes you recoil, and all you can think about is the meal you've been putting off.

That's what it's like on a daily basis - a pervasive itch I can't reach - though it used to be drugs, before I was corrupted. I was addicted to mana, and I thought that was bad. And it is - I'll never say it isn't. But that's a thing one can have treated, and overcome with time and effort. Now? Am I more demon than elf? I don't know anymore, but I know what demons feed on. I know what they want, more than anything. I...

Journey Beyond

The calm evening shifted and the wind picked up, frigidly buffeting the stalwart stone structure. Fortunately, dwarven craftsmen know their trade well and thus the inside was cozy and warm.

Elaeryn reclined in deep thought, sipping at a glass of whisky as he enjoyed the warmth and glow of a crackling fire. The drink was watered down these days; the Ranger-Lord found that, ensconced in the wilderness, he had less need of substance to induce relaxation. Around him were scattered a few cherished gifts: the results of he and Neri’s little Winter Veil exchange. A new blank journal for her to record her naturalist information; the beveled highball glass from which he currently drank; a pie with two slices missing; fresh salted...
