Quiet filled the workshop. Tools were put away, scraps of wood set aside, as Amorthon inspected the piece in front of him critically. With a heavy sigh he ran his hand across the headboard, the horse carved there, and then along the leg of the crib he'd been inspecting, checking for imperfections before grabbing padding to wrap around the uncovered leg. The carriage would be by later in the day to pick up the piece, and within a week or so it would arrive in Darkwood Village. What happened after that, well that was up to his brother and, what was her name? Lorilin?
He grit his teeth as he tightened the rope around the leg and the padding before straightening up and brushing his hands together. He gave the headboard one more glance before grabbing a nearby and draping it over the large piece. It was as secure and as protected at it was going to get...and he'd check it again before it left the workshop. He was nothing, if not thorough. Another, larger sheet, was draped over the entire piece before he turned and walked out of the workshop, easing down onto the grass just outside.
Two years. Two years ago he'd been in almost the exact same spot, with two cribs ready to go out to a couple he'd met only a few months earlier. He'd been searching for acceptance then. A place, a meaning,...something. And so he'd turned to the one thing he felt he was decent at, and put his time and effort into those pieces, hoping that maybe...just maybe, he'd be wanted. Clearly not for being him, but at the very least for something he was able to do. And he'd been disappointed.
They hadn't asked for those cribs then, just as his brother and his lover hadn't asked for the crib now. And yet here he was again. He ran a hand through his hair before twisting the ring on his right hand. One day he'd learn, reach acceptance of himself...He gave one more glance back inside the workshop, and the small bits of dark-colored wood that were visible from under the sheet. One day...maybe. But not today.
You know how much I love Morty. So glad to see you posting here, too. This particular story pulls on my heart for him--he wasn't to be accepted and loved so badly. I love him so much. <3
