Sister Anetta followed the crowd as it surged through the front door and around to the side of the tavern. On the ground, a few feet from the building, was a member of the Night Watch holding a torch and kneeling on the ground next to the body of a young man. Sister Anetta moved through the crowd and stood at the edge of the firelight and looked down at the body.
The man was dressed in simple clothes, not the type that one would wear on the road. His head was turned at an odd angle and his arms and legs were spread from the body. The priestess looked up at the tavern and spied a window on the second floor that had been broken out. Turning back to the body, she watched as the militia man placed a finger on the man’s neck. After a moment, the Night Watch pulled his hand back and shook his head slowly.
Sister Anetta’s eyes grew wide and she looked around. Not seeing what she was looking for, she began pushing her way through the crowd and made her way back to the front door. Once inside, the priestess quickly moved through the main room and took the stairs to the second floor. Her robes rippled behind her as ran down the hallway, until she finally came to a stop in front of one of the doors. Pulling a key from the pouch hanging on her belt, she took two tries to get it into the lock before she could open the door. Pushing the door open, she looked into the room that was illuminated by an oil lamp that sat on the table.
“Sabina?” the priestess called out nervously.
It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the light of the lamp. Sister’s Anetta stepped into the room and moved to the bedside. The young lady was silently sleeping under the covers. The priestess breathed a sigh of relief and said a quick prayer to Light. Trying not to wake the young lady, Sister Anetta turned and quietly left the room. Carefully, she turned the key and locked the door again. Putting the key away, she glanced away from the door as she thought about what had just happened. Then, cautiously, she moved through the hall again and made her way back to the main room of the tavern to find out what had happened.
