(( This is an old piece I wrote after an adorable roleplay scene. I'm bringing it over from tumblr. ))
Just before the stroke of midnight two elves pushed a little rowboat off the shore of a lake. They had disturbed the glass-like water, creating big ripples in the otherwise near perfect reflection of the vast sky above. Safe inside their borrowed vessel, the elves began to row out to the approximate center of the star shimmering mirror; their laughter and chatter echoed just barely against the distant cliff in the deep night.
A few short hours prior Kavaina had been playing guitar to a nearly empty inn as a way to pass the time. The mid-week bustle of the city rarely went strong after the sun set, making late nights for the elf dull. She wasn’t scheduled to leave Silvermoon for another couple of days, so her time was spent playing guitar and hoping someone in the often over-dramatic city would show interest in a musician.
Horizon was just as bored. Though his family was always wonderful to spend time with, the wild-haired man didn’t like staying in one place too long. Night in the family manor isn’t a very active time, so he went to wander the city. When he heard the familiar guitarist he found her and sneaked behind her as she casually attempted to figure out what to play next. “Could you play a song called Islands?” He asked, a smile on his face. “It is a favorite of mine.”
Kavaina nearly failed at controlling her excitement as she played the tune, singing the lyrics from memory with a tone unhindered by the requirements of being an entertainer; the song was personal to her too. He had even harmonized with her and the guitar, singing along with his warm, unpolished voice.
Thinking back on the song, Kav lay against Horizon while they seemingly floated through space gazing at the stars above. They subtle scent of plum wine from Horizon’s breath just added to the moment. The words began to flow from her lips again, unaccompanied by a guitar this time. It was the perfect moment for that song.
We could build an island
You and I could swim beside
Where we could ride the tides
Until we fall asleep at night
