The Lost Brother - Part 3

There he stood outside the manor gates, looking up at the property has he did so many years ago. The same gates he’d been escorted out of by his parents wishes, stripped of his surname and sent on his way.

He never expected to be standing out here once again, for any reason. And yet, here he was. Saeil never sent a letter back to his brother, instead he decided to just show up how he wanted, when he wanted. Maybe it was immature of him to be like that but if Alaris really wanted him back in his life then why should he care when and how it happens, right?

He had considered dressing up, looking nice and like a proper man of noble birth but that wasn’t who he was and he had no intention of trying to impress his brother with things that were obviously an act. Instead he wore the same sort of thing he always did. His black boots, tight black pants, he did opt for a button-down shirt rather than a t-shirt. But it still wasn’t an unusual outfit for him.

Saeil wasn’t sure how long he’d been standing there but finally he pushed open the gate and marched right up to the door and knocking. The butler who answered was the same one who had worked for their family for years and he immediately knew who the fire dancer was. He simply turned and walked away, going to find Alaris.

When the novelist walked into the foyer and saw Saeil there, he was in shock, standing there and just staring at his younger brother, watching the way there was such anger and hurt boiling just below the surface. He didn’t know what the right thing to do or say was and simply walked over, reaching to give him a hug.

It was the wrong move. Right as Alaris moved in, Saeil was swinging, landing a single, hard punch right in the jaw. His tone was calm but clearly one of warning as the novelist snapped back, raising a hand to cover the injury. “Don’t… touch me.” As soon as the words left Saeil’s lips, everything started coming out. “Don’t touch me. Don’t touch Kai. Don’t you dare fucking touch Lain. They’re mine and you can’t have them. My life is mine and you can’t have it. I have good things… I have them in my life and I did it without any of this…” He waved his hands around at the lavish furnishings. “What I have is real and amazing and it’s better and more than anything you have in this joke of a home.” Although that punch didn’t fix anything that had happened and neither did his words, it still felt as though something he’d been holding onto all this time was finally released, at least a little bit.

Alaris just stared at Saeil after he finished, not saying anything for a moment as he stretched his jaw then finally spoke, his tone gentle, “Saeil… I did not know those people were in your life like that. And I never had any intention of anything intimate with them. I will not touch them.” He paused a moment, lowering his gaze before looking back up at Saeil, a pained look on his face. “Trust me, my brother… I know just as well as you that all of these things I have do not bring happiness. It is all meaningless and simply the life I was given. I did not work for it or earn it and surely do not deserve it. I know that you resent this sort of life and I do not blame you for that. It was never kind to you and constantly put you down and was hardly fair to you in any way. I can tell that you still hurt from it and I wish that I could fix that.”

Wincing slightly, Saeil glanced away, trying to regain his composure. “Is that why you want me back in your life? To try to fix what our parents did? It’s already been done and I really don’t care about the family name. I really don’t think I even want it back. So… no thanks.”

Frowning, the novelist shook his head, “No… I do not expect you to want that back. If you do want it, it is yours but I never thought that you would like to have the family name again. No… I simply… I simply wish to be your brother again. In the true sense of the word, not simply sharing a name. But I know something like that will take time. I hope that you will be willing to spend some time with me… and perhaps, eventually, we can rebuild that bond. I know that is a lot to ask though…”

Running a hand through his hair, Saeil sighed deeply, “It is, yes.  But…. fine. You’re already in my life, after all. You’re dating Fey, I’m seeing Kai… It’s just gonna be a mess if we can’t get along. I’m sick of messes. And they both have enough to deal with as it is without dealing with this bullshit. Let’s at least try to be in a room together again without me wanting to punch you in that stupid face of yours.”

A slight smirk appeared on Alaris’ face, giving a light chuckle under his breath. “I believe that would be a good start, yes. Some tea or coffee then?” He gestured towards the sitting room, looking at Saeil expectantly.
