Braghaman sat quietly in the room that the guards had put him in. They had shut the door and latched it, leaving the paladin all alone. Letting out a sigh, Bragh leaned forward in his seat and rested his elbows on his knees. He shook his head as he thought through the situation. After a few moments, he leaned back in the chair and waited.
With no windows, it was hard for Bragh to measure the time as it passed. He could hear people moving around outside. There were several conversations going on out there, but none of them really attracted his attention. He knew that there was only one conversation that he’d be interested in hearing. He also knew that if it involved his wife, that he’d have no trouble knowing what was said.
Time passed slowly as Bragh thought about the situation. He tried to sort through how someone could have misidentified him. Why would someone think that he’d need to rob any store here in the city? Was it intentional? No matter how he looked at the situation, he could not come up with a logical reason for the accusation. It had to be a mistake.
So lost in thought, the paladin almost missed the sound of the latch of the door being moved. Bragh looked up as the door opened and a guard stepped into the room. The guard motioned for Bragh to get up.
“Come with me, please.”
Braghaman followed, the guard giving no hint as to what was going to happen next. As they moved into the front room, Braghaman’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. Waiting near the front desk was Amand Rignomer.
“Lieutenant.”
“Larethian.”
“Lieutenant Rignomer came to us to try and clarify the situation,” the guard explained to Braghaman.
“Lord Shadowbreaker sent me to explain that you had been in meetings all morning,” the tall paladin explained. “So obviously you could not have been involved with any incidents that had happened during that time.”
“We’re releasing you,” the guard said. “But we may need to ask you some more questions in the future.”
“Well, you know where to find me,” Braghaman said with a frown that showed what he thought of any future questions. “Am I free to go?”
“Yes, sir.”
Braghaman watched the guard for a moment longer before turning to look up at the other paladin. Giving a quick nod, Braghaman headed through the door followed closely behind by Rignomer. About twenty paces outside of the guard station, the two paladins came to a stop.
“Try to stay out of trouble, Larethian,” Rignomer said in a flat tone.
“You won’t need to tell me twice, lieutenant. I figure I’d better get home anyway. Niviene is probably not too pleased.”
“Of course.” Rignomer turned without further comment and started walking towards the Cathedral.
Braghaman smirked and shook his head before heading off towards the the gryphon master. He hadn’t gotten too far along before he heard his name called out.
“Commander Larethian.”
Bragh looked around and found a gentleman sitting on a bench next to the canal. It took a moment for the paladin to place the man.
“Mr. Ridgewell’s assistant,” Braghaman said with a nod.
“Yes, sir. Pleasure to see you again.”
“How can I help you today?” Bragh asked in a voice that he hoped would express his complete disinterest in being helpful.
“Nothing at all, Commander. We had just heard that you faced some unfortunate difficulties today and wanted to inquire as to how you fare.”
“Thank you for the concern.”
“My employer wished to extend his assistance in helping to clear up whatever difficulties had arisen.”
“You can tell Mr. Ridgewell that I appreciate his concern, but the matter has been cleared up.”
“Of course, commander,” the gentleman answered before standing up from the bench. “I will let my employer know. Have a good afternoon, Commander Larethian.” He then turned and started walking away.
“You, too,” Bragh answered quietly as he watched the other’s back disappear into the street traffic. Frowning slightly, the paladin turned and quickened his pace towards the gryphons and his exit from the city.
That guy! Still trying to nab Bragh's ride.
