“See? Right there! I told you!”
The imp hopped up and down, pointing at a spot on the ground next to a tree. Banagan moved through the woods and came to stand next to Voltuk. Kneeling down, the warlock picked up a few pine needles and looked at them closely through his mask. Letting out a sigh, he let go of the needles and let them drop to the ground.
“You are certain?” Banagan asked as he slowly stood up and looked through the trees. In the distance, he saw a familiar house.
“Yes,” Voltuk said. “He was right here. Watched him like you said.”
“He must have been watching the whole thing.”
“Who are you?” a voice asked.
Banagan turned to see another figure step out of the shadows. His dark leathers blended in with the night time shadows, but his shaved head shone in the little bit of light that was making through the trees. His hands held onto the knives that hung on his belt.
“Er…” Banagan started to say, but cut himself off suddenly. The leather-clad man tilted his head slightly and stared at the warlock. “No one.”
“What are you doing?” Erik asked.
“I’m looking for a monster,” Banagan answered slowly, hoping that his mask would do enough to muffle his voice.
“There are definitely those here,” Erik said quietly. “A couple of them caused some problems recently.”
“Something pretty fel,” Banagan offered.
“How do you know?” the rogue calmly asked.
“Trust me,” Banagan responded, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“How do I know that you didn’t have a part in this attack?”
“I didn’t.”
“I should take your word on this?”
“Take it or not, as you wish. I had nothing to do with this.”
“Then you won’t mind explaining to the commander what you are doing here behind his house.”
“That could be a problem,” Banagan said, dropping his arms to his side. “I have other business to attend to.”
“I really must insist,” Erik continued, drawing his knives from their sheathes.
“Perhaps next time,” the warlock answered. Then he spoke a brief word of magic. There was a flash of green light. The rogue blinked a couple of times, his sight coming back just in time to see a faint green circle on the ground where the warlock had been standing.
The rogue spun around and he scanned the area for the missing warlock. Finally his eyes settled on the imp that was still there, grinning. Erik took a step towards the imp, but before he could get within arms length the minion had disappeared as well. He listened for any sound of the two when he heard one word echo through the woods, causing a puzzled look on his face.
“Sucker.”
Well, it just won't be Voltuk if he didn't say it while getting away with something.
I absolutely love this! I miss the Voltuk stories.
Aha. Finally we'll get to the bottom of this. With adorable imp.
Ha! The last bit made me chuckle.
