From the Frying pan into the fire

After making a brief stop to her hotel room to take a quick shower and to change into her argent crusade garb, Vel had straightened herself out.  She put on some makeup to cover up the tear stains that were still below her eyes and she shakily smoothed out her robes.  Her extremely long red hair was pulled back into a pony tail and, as always had a slight curl to it, making it look shorter than it actually was.

When Vel had finally reached the courthouse the tension was palpable.  She looked around the room and only saw one person she actually knew.  Her older brother, Haveth was standing close to the back of the courthouse.  He was looking for someone, and it soon became apparent that it was his little sister.  He flagged her down and beckoned her closer.  He started whipering to her as he kept a look out for another.  “I take it you have been back home?” He looked at her with a knowing gaze as he focuses on her demeanor and when Veli had merely nodded he responded,  “Then you know he did it, right?  There is something else.  You aren’t safe.  He blames all of their problems on you because when you left everything got even worse in there.  He got so angry and started drinking and the fights got steadily worse.  I was kind of surprised that it didn’t come to this sooner.  What’s worse is that he fooled Aerian into believing his lies and they both are searching for you.  You shouldn’t be here but I will do everything to keep you safe.”

After standing there in silence for several moments she closed her eyes, feeling like a huge weight had been placed on her shoulder and she started to slouch,  “Thank you, Haveth.  You were always so protective of me, but  I can take care of myself.  That’s what I have been doing all of these years, your sentiment is appreciated though.”  She smiled softly up to her brother  then as the trial started she frowned  when she still didn’t see the younger of the two brothers.  Wondering what he had up his sleeve she put it out of her mind for a brief moment when her father was escorted in with chains around his hands and legs. She saw him stop and stare directly at her, his eyes seeming like he was boring holes into her soul and she couldn’t help but shudder.  Noticing both of their reactions, Haveth laid his hand on her back and smiled comfortingly. Then, before both of them had a chance to say anything, the doors in the back of the courthouse burst open.  Veli had seen a brief glimpse of her brother before smoke started filling up the court.  Veli felt then her older brother’s arms wrap around her and pull her off towards the side of the room.  and as she tried to control her coughing the both of them slipped out a side door.

When Veli and Haveth were finally out of sight from the courthouse Haveth stopped and turned back to her, giving her a stern look and spoke with conviction, “You, little sister are going into hiding.  You are going to change your name and dye your hair.  You cannot be out here and get killed like mother did because that is what father’s intent is.  Him and our brother are enemies now and they are much too dangerous for you to risk losing your life.  I will not take no for an answer and will make a prisoner out of you if you refuse.”  Veli just sighed and nodded, she knew that she couldn’t argue with him, even if she wanted to, so she renamed herself Velinthria Lightwhisper and transformed herself into a different person as he requested
