Shadows Deepen

After travelling straight for several days to return home as requested Vel had finally made it back to Silvermoon near the middle of the night.  Knowing that she could not go to see what was left of their house in this state, she decided to try and get some sleep at the inn and go there fresh in the morning.

Little did she know that rest would not come so easily.  She laid down between the sheets and for hours she would toss and turn, her mind not allowing her the rest she needed until finally several hours later she had succumb to the exhaustion that overwhelmed her.  Even then, the sleep she so desperately needed did not come and she had awoken only a few hours later.  It was then that she knew that this was as ready as she would get and departed off towards the home that she once knew.

Nearly an hour had passed as she walked slowly up to the ruin of her house.  Stepping through what was left of the front door she saw the destruction and horror unlike anything she could have imagined.  Bookcases laid shattered on the floor and the remains of memories long lost scattered laid among the pile of rubble.  The table where they shared many meals was flipped over and most of the legs were broken off of it.  Then as she thought things couldn’t get worse, they did.  She had entered the room where she had gathered her mother was actually murdered.  Blood pooled on the floor and the scent of it was horrendous.  The investigators must have just left everything the way they found it and Vel’s heart filled with despair in what had been left of her life and family.

After several minutes of just staring in horror her eyes turned to the smoldering fireplace in the corner.  She saw something sparkling in it and knew that there was only one person who could have done this.  She walked over and knew in her heart that her father had to have been the one, she found both of their wedding rings scorched in the fire place and broken into many pieces.  She picked up the now cooled pieces of the rings and sat on the floor next to the blood and wept for hours until she had no more tears to cry.  Her past life was over, and there was no way that she could salvage any of it.

Finally after hours of weeping she finally stood back up and took out a sheet of silk cloth that she had dyed black and laid it over the pool of blood and retrieved the blood red rose and laid it on top and walked out for the last time of the home that she once knew and loved and like her family now laid in ruin and proceeded to the Courthouse.
