Her Resolution

Velinthria shot up in bed and the cold sweat started to bead up on her face and chest and she could feel her heart nearly beating out of her chest.  She had that dream again, and couldn’t sleep.  Her mother came to her in her dreams.  She was holding out her arms and she could see the stab wounds across her chest and the large gash on her mother’s neck from where Veli’s father had slit her throat.  She feared for that to happen to her, true, but before that could happen the exhaustion alone could kill her as well.  Veli assumed that was exactly what he had wanted.  She would wear herself out and fall victim to one of his attacks for she was too tired to defend herself.  But that wasn’t the only thing weighing on her mind.
The guilt that was welling up in her stomach and eating away at her that this could eventually catch up with her brother as well.  Their running, him doing everything to protect her could eventually cost him his life was exactly the opposite reason she had become a healer in the first place.  She knew all he was trying to do was keep her safe, and he was doing an amazing job at that, but all of her training she had done when she left, everything she had striven to do was taken away. What’s more was she was committing the same sins against her brother that all of the scourge had done against complete strangers and her heart sank even a little deeper into her chest.
She was scared, sure.  She knew that should her father catch up with her she would be dead but this life, she concluded would be the death of her anyways from all of the pain she was causing everyone around her so she decided to stop.  Stop running, stop hiding, she would leave her brother and let him get on with his own life away from her, and away from all the danger she had put him in.
Veli still felt the anger her father felt.  The hate that consumed him.  She had supposed she would until they came face to face but all of the bitterness in the world couldn’t even slightly compare to all of the guilt and fear she was already putting herself through by being on the run.
