Why?

Marachius set his bag on the bed and looked around the small room. The inn in Duskwood was smaller than the Cathedral, obviously, but the room was comfortable. Nodding to himself in approval, the paladin picked up his breastplate and put it on, lacing the buckles along the way. Then slinging his great sword onto his back, he left the room and made his way out of the inn to meet the commander. He thought to himself that he didn’t want to keep the commander waiting.

Walking to the center of the village, Marc saw the elder paladin sitting on the edge of the fountain outside the town hall. Rather unsure of what was happening, Marc walked over to the fountain and stood at attention.

“At ease,” the elder paladin said with a slight...

Investigating

“See? Right there! I told you!”

The imp hopped up and down, pointing at a spot on the ground next to a tree. Banagan moved through the woods and came to stand next to Voltuk. Kneeling down, the warlock picked up a few pine needles and looked at them closely through his mask. Letting out a sigh, he let go of the needles and let them drop to the ground.

“You are certain?” Banagan asked as he slowly stood up and looked through the trees. In the distance, he saw a familiar house.

“Yes,” Voltuk said. “He was right here. Watched him like you said.”

“He must have been watching the whole thing.”

“Who are you?” a voice asked.

Banagan turned to see another figure step out of the shadows. His dark leathers blended in...

AU: Future Memories

The fire in the hearth crackled as orange flames danced around the thick logs on the grate. Light and shadows danced around the stones surrounding it, as if the fire were putting on a play for anyone nearby. But the only person to notice was the old figure sitting beside the hearth.

He sat in a low chair, looking at the fire beside him and feeling its heat wash over his hands and face. His once colorful hair had long since shifted to silver-gray and was bound into one braid now that hung over his right shoulder. Around his eyes and mouth were many deep-set wrinkles, whose meanings seemed to change with the mood. He looked away from the fire towards the young children that were running and playing through the house, and they were...

Attacking the Homestead

(Collaborative writing with Niviene)

It took several minutes before silence finally reigned in the Larethian household. Having finished their nightly story, Banagan and Korissa were picked up and carried to their respective beds. Soon after, Braghaman came down the stairs and walked back into the living room where Niviene was still sitting on the couch. Placing his hands on the back of the couch, the paladin leaned forward and kissed the priestess lightly on the cheek.

“The kids have been tucked into bed,” Braghaman said triumphantly with a grin.

She smiled up at him, her fingers unconsciously going to the braid that hung down at the side of his head, “You always were better at that than me. They’re glad you’re home. I’m...

Darkness In The Night

5a83a1fb80641.jpg

The shadows were deep, almost tangible as they seeped between the trees. In the distance, eerie howls could be heard echoing through the forests as if they were greeting the night that had fallen across the land. A lone figure stood in the shadows, blackened armor blending with the darkness but not quite completely, as if the armor were too dark for the shadows to contain. The only light cast from this lone sentry were the two points that shown from his helm. Two red points that seems to have a fire burning deep in them. The eyes stared intently through the trees, keeping watch on the home in the distance.

“He has returned home,” a cold, metallic voice said calmly, quietly. “Finally.”

The armored figure stopped...

Paladin Training Stories

((A couple of years ago, I wrote a series of short stories about Braghaman training a new batch of paladin trainees. Without flooding the front page with so many stories, I'm going to leave a link instead so that people who haven't seen them before can go if they want.

Homecoming

Braghaman slid off the back of the gryphon and looked around the landing area. Nodding in satisfaction, he turned to the gryphon handler and handed over a few coins for her troubles. Lifting his rucksack from the ground and slinging it over his shoulder, he stepped out to the road and looked down at Darkshire.

“Welcome back commander.”

Braghaman glanced to his left to see one of the Nightwatch walking towards him. The paladin turned and nodded to the guard.

“Thanks. Glad to see everything is still standing. Anything interesting happen while I was gone?”

“Not really. Had a hog break out its pen and run for the woods.”

“Don’t expect you’ll see that one back,” Bragh said with a shake of his head and quick...

Last Stand

“On the right!”

The group of paladins shifted their attention at Braghaman’s call. Angling shields and weapons, they turned as a unit to face a new batch of demons that came running at the clearing. The demons were once more storming the beach head at Hope’s Landing, making one last attempt to overtake the forces there. The demons pushed against the shields, trying to get past, but the young paladins held true.

“Hold the line!” Braghaman yelled. “Hold them!”

Working together, the paladins held the demons at bay, separating one or two out at a time for the rest of the troops to dispatch. After several long minutes, they continued to thin through the group of beasts until finally they had all been slain without any...

Inquiry

Braghaman was tired. He sat on a bench to the side of the room, his back resting against the wall behind him. His head drooped slightly and his eyes stared at the floor as he attempted to listen to the meeting going on around him. It was hard to stay focused, though, and his mind would go blank from time to time, which when noticed caused the paladin to give his brain a “mental shake” so that he could try to catch up on what had just been said.

The battle at Hope’s Landing had been a long one. The Eredar and their demonic allies had pushed against the defenses there for several hours. There were some injuries, both minor and serious, before the enemy was eventually repelled and forced to retreat. There had been one casualty. And...

Casualties

“Incoming!”

The warning echoed across the encampment, causing the men and women to quickly gather their armaments and move to their assigned positions. Braghaman moved silently, his hands gripping his warhammer tightly, and came to stand next to Heradus and the other Draenei that he’d been working with.

Across the clearing, the paladin could hear commands being barked at the younger paladins. Braghaman put it all out of his mind. Not my business, he thought briefly to himself. Got bigger things to be concerned with.

“There!” Heradus yelled and pointed. Through the opening in the mountain walls, demons were beginning to surge forward. Dozens of defiled stalkers howled and began running towards the defenses. The Draenei...

Boots On The Ground

Braghaman stepped next to a group of Draenei on the teleportation pad. His friend, Heradus, glanced at him and nodded, a slight smile on his face, before he turned to the one at the control panel. Braghaman looked down and closed his eyes, tensing up in his neck and shoulders. He’d been told that it was no different than using the portals in the mage tower in Stormwind, but the paladin was convinced that it felt different. He heard the switch get thrown and tensed up a little more before the blinding light flared around him.

After a moment, Braghaman felt his boots hit the ground. Letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, Bragh opened his eyes and looked around at the scorched setting of Argus. As he looked around,...

Back To Work

“And that is all, commander!” the priest said with a snarl before turning an storming away from the paladin. Braghaman stood quietly, as he had during the entire tirade, and waited until the priest had turned the corner in the hallway of the ship. Once the priest was out of sight, Bragh let out a quick sigh and shook his head.

“This man really does not like you, friend Braghaman.”

Bragh turned to see the large form of a Draenei walking towards him. His armor was clean, but dented, and he rested a massive polearm on his shoulder.

“I think he really doesn’t, Heradus.”

“What did you do, my friend, to earn that much enmity?”

“He didn’t like that I wasn’t in his chain of command.”

“That is all? Did you...

A Final Meeting

(Originally posted Nov 14, 2010)

Braghaman sat up on the bed and glanced around the room. It was a small room, enough space for a table and a chair at one side and the bed at the other. It was a quaint home, comfortable for the people who lived here usually. The hearth had a cozy fire in it, casting a warm glow around the room. The door was open, the early evening peering into the room.

It had been two days since the priestess had brought him here. Smuggled out in the back of a wagon, she'd brought him to Darkshire and to this little home just outside. She'd bound his hand and helped him as best she could. Then the young priestess returned to Stormwind to see what could be found out.

Two days of laying in the bed with nothing to do...

Voices In The Dark

(Originally posted Nov 11, 2010)

Nalya was new to the Cathedral. She had completed her priestly training in Northshire Abbey and had only recently arrived in Stormwind. As a young priestess, she was still amazed at the grandeur and size of the Cathedral. The city was much larger than her home in Darkshire. But at least she didn't have to worry about something coming in to town to eat her, she thought as she walked through the halls of the Cathedral.

She was new, so she had been given mostly menial tasks to do. But Nalya didn't mind. She was happy to be helping in any way she could. This evening, she'd been given the task of lighting the candles in the rooms in the keep. With a calm smile, she walked down the halls of the lower...

Discussions in the Dark

(Originally posted Nov 3, 2010)

Deep in the halls of the Cathedral, the light of the morning barely made itself known. Sitting in his lonely cell, the priest was on the floor, cross-legged with his head bowed. As he slowly, rhythmically breathed, his peace ended with the quiet tapping on the door to his room.

"Come," the priest said quietly, his head remaining bowed.

"Father Corenyn," the paladin greeted quietly as he entered the room and shut the door.

"Brother Faris," the priest returned, finally looking up to the doorway. He looked young, not quiet the years of middle age. Apparently fit, he never seemed to tire in front of the others in the Cathedral. "You bring news?"

"I do, father," Faris began as he moved closer. The...

Discussions in Dark Places

(Originally posted Oct 28, 2010)

Slowly, consciousness creeped up on the paladin. And with it came the pain. A dull throbbing pulsed in his head. He could feel his heart beating in his head, and it was not a pleasant sensation. Slowly, he tried to bring his hand to his forehead, but couldn't reach his head. Tentatively, Braghaman pulled on his arm with no success. Jerking harder, he could begin to make out the sound of metal jingling near his ears. Turning his head to the side, Bragh could see his arms hanging from the wall by heavy chains.

"Glad to see you're back with us," a gruff voice spoke in the shadows.

Wincing, Bragh began looking around. The room was shadowed. He was sitting on the floor, chained to the wall by his wrists....

A Cold Day In...

(Originally posted Oct 27, 2010)

The hour was late. Sooner than some would want, the morning would begin to break along the horizon. But for the moment, darkness had settled deep as the night slowly progressed. Most had long since gone to sleep, few continued to mill around the city of Stormwind.

Inside one of the town's inn, the silence was disrupted by five men who quietly moved from the entrance to the steps. Hints of armor could be seen beneath their cloaks. The men had taken the trouble to try and muffle the metal of their plate, wrapping particular parts in cloth to reduce the ringing. As the five men began to climb the stairs to the second level, they drew clubs.

"Who are we looking for?" one of the men whispered from the...

Unwritten Invitations

(Originally posted Oct 23, 2010)

A mist rose lazily from the ground, still damp from the rain that had torn through the realm earlier. In the woods, the occasional howl would echo among the trees as beasts began emerging from their lairs as the weather cleared. And in the town, the citizens also began to come out of their homes, wondering out into the twilight. As the watchers shook off their cloaks, water spraying into the air again, the clopping of hooves sounded as a lone rider came into the town's center.

Braghaman pushed the hood of his cloak back, water dripping down his back, as he rode into Darkshire. His patrol had been long and wet, at least one would guess that from his appearance. The paladin reined his horse in, and sat...

Warnings In The Night

(Originally posted Sept 29, 2010)

Braghaman sat near the fire with his feet propped up on the hearth. Madame Eva floated around the common room, checking on all of her regular customers and the weary travelers who sought a safe room for the night. But she always found a moment to check on the paladin, even though she knew he would never ask for anything more than a cup of coffee to help keep the chill in check.

Walking away from him again, Madame Eva patted Bragh on his shoulder. The slight metallic ringing could be heard from the armor he had beneath his traveling cloak. She turned towards the door as a new person arrived to her inn. The hostess greeted her new guest, a large man with his cloak pulled close, but it seemed as though...

Resisting Arrest

(Originally posted Sept 11, 2010)

The shadows of Duskwood were cast deep as night creeped up on the town of Darkshire. The howls and screeches of the forest echoed off the buildings as people raced in and out of town. Braghaman stepped out of Madame Eva's inn and looked around the town. Dressed in full armor, he was still adjusting one of the straps on his breastplate as he began walking towards the town hall. He had only crossed the road when he heard a call.

"Larethian!" the voice called far too loudly for the quiet town.
Braghaman stopped and turned towards the voice. The look of curiosity was immediately replaced with one much darker.

"Faris," Bragh replied with a grumble in the back of his throat. "What do you want now?" he asked,...
